SEXUALITY AND THE TREATMENT OF SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION

SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
Human sexual response consists of multiple phases. Difficulties can arise in at any point. Lack of desire, difficulty being aroused, or orgasmic problems can be caused by many factors, some of which are:

  • communication/marital problems
  • sexual misinformation or early sexual prohibitions
  • childhood trauma
  • medication side effects or chronic illness such as diabetes
  • grief due to infertility or loss
  • loss of normal physical functioning due to surgery or injury
EXAMPLES OF SEXUAL DIFFICULTIES

  • loss of sexual desire
  • erectile difficulties
  • difficulties achieving orgasm for both men and women
  • rapid ejaculation
  • painful intercourse
  • compulsive sexual disorders

EVALUATION AND TREATMENT

Treatment of sexual dysfunction is sometimes as simple as providing information and education. At times, the need to come to terms with negative attitudes about sexuality or dealing with the effects of illness or aging becomes the focus of the treatment. Behavioral techniques are explained as in the treatment of rapid ejaculation or other orgasmic difficulties. As part of the evaluation process, it is important to understand the role of communication and conflict between partners that may be causing the difficulty or making it worse.

When necessary, a referral to the appropriate physician, e.g., gynecologist, urologist or endocrinologist or your family practitioner can be made.
